Mold Exposure Symptoms: What to Know
This page is general information, not medical advice. If you have health concerns, talk to a doctor.
Common symptoms
According to the CDC, people sensitive to mold may experience:
- Stuffy nose, sneezing, runny nose
- Itchy or red eyes
- Coughing or wheezing
- Sore throat
- Skin irritation
Who is at higher risk
- People with allergies or asthma
- People with weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease
- Infants, children and older adults
About "black mold"
Stachybotrys chartarum is often called black mold. The CDC notes that many molds are black and that all indoor mold growth should be removed regardless of type — the color doesn't determine how hazardous it is.
When to act
- See a doctor if symptoms are severe, persistent, or involve breathing difficulty.
- Fix the moisture source and remove the mold; testing can help find hidden growth when symptoms don't match what you can see.
